Akwaaba! Glad You're Here.
Akwaaba simply means welcome in my native language. So, welcome to my blog! I am a young graduate student, aspiring to have a career in International Development, while trying to turn my love of conversing into writing and sharing myself with the world. I believe that everyone has a different story; however, there are similarities in each individual's story and that is what makes you know that you are never alone. I want every young person to succeed in ways that exceed their expectations and be able to "live their best life," while navigating this not so perfect world.
I started this blog to share all things school, family, frienships and life in its entirety. I also discuss the unpleasant realities of several Africans as well as major issues that exist in the continent. It is finally here -- after close to four years of contemplating! As a woman of faith, this blog will hopefully give you a sense of love, inspiration, comfort, and reassurance in life. You will also be able to experience the Ghanaian in me through my content and how I view the world through my lens.
If you have more questions, kindly check out the "Get to Know Me" page below and you will definitely leave knowing a lot more about me. I am very talkative, so you can always leave a direct message or email! My name is Adwoa and it is a pleasure to meet you. Please stick around for this ride!
GET TO KNOW ME
What is your name?
My name is Adwoa (Ah-jowa). "Gyimaah's Thoughts" comes from my middle name, Gyimaah (Ji-maa).
Who are you?
I am from Ghana, West Africa! I was born in London, UK but raised and live in Accra, the capital of Ghana. I am specifically from Aburi in the Eastern Region.
I am currently a graduate student at The George Washington University in Washington DC. I have two siblings; an older sister and a younger brother.
What are you studying?
I am pursuing a Master of Arts in International Affairs with a concentration in Global Gender Policy and a regional focus on Africa.
Some of my main goals are to be successful enough to give back to underprivileged children in Ghana, use my voice and professional experience to influence change. I want to be a contributor to international development, the amplification of minority voices and equity across the board. My goal is also to bring Africa to the world through sharing our narrative and making connections.
What is your favourite colour?
I do not have a favourite colour but I love bright colours that compliment my dark skin!
What is your favourite food?
My consistent favourite food since childhood has always been kontomire (African Spinach) stew. I can pair it with literally anything- rice, yam, plantains, gari (cassava flakes) or eat it by itself. I do enjoy a good bowl of omotuo (rice balls) with groundnut soup too. I love good food!
What is your favourite Bible Verse?
John 14:27! "I am leaving you with a gift- peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." The words are very soothing and a sweet reminder to always stay calm through all things.
